HILLWOOD MUSEUM (CANCELED)
DATE:
Tuesday, 27 November (canceled)
TIME:
12:00 – 4:00
PRICE:
$70.00

PROGRAM:
Guests will enjoy a unique experience at the recently renovated Hillwood Museum.  The museum is the former residence of Marjorie Merriweather Post, cereal heiress, collector and philanthropist. Post was once one of the grande dames of Washington society.  She collected art throughout her life, emphasizing only the finest French and Russian objects.  The opulent Georgian, 40-room mansion, built in 1926, and subsequent auxiliary buildings, house her collection as well as the turn-of-the century collection of her father, Charles W. Post, founder of the Post Cereal Company.  To visit Hillwood is to step into a lifestyle that is quickly disappearing.  Both the physical setting and the vast number of objects on display are of rare significance and great beauty. Eighteenth century French tapestries, furniture, and Severes porcelain formed a magnificent setting for Post’s entertaining.  Her collection of Russian icons, gold and silver pieces, porcelain and Fabergé eggs has been called the most representative outside of the former Soviet Union.

The grounds of the estate are equally magnificent.  Post created the gardens as an integral part of the estate consulting landscape architect Perry Wheeler, known for his work in helping design the White House Rose Garden. The 25 acres of land bordering Rock Creek Park contain Japanese and formal French gardens, a small dacha - or Russian summer house - and a greenhouse built in 1930 with a vast collection of orchids, the heiress’s favorite flower.

FEATURES: Transportation included
NOTE: Children under the age of 6 are not permitted.

TOUR OF MOUNT VERNON
DATE:
Wednesday, 28 November
TIME:
11:00 – 5:00
PRICE:
$65.00 per person

PROGRAM:
Today you are invited to travel along the banks of the Potomac River to enjoy an intimate glimpse of 18th century Virginia.  Waiting beyond the gates of Mount Vernon stands the home of George Washington.  Mr. Washington's presence can be felt throughout the plantation, from the gardens and greens to the original furnishings placed throughout the Georgian-style manor house. The most notable horticulturist in 18th century Northern Virginia was George Washington.

After your tour of the mansion and grounds, guests will board your awaiting coach for the return trip along the George Washington Memorial Parkway to Alexandria, Virginia, referred to by many as George Washington's home town.  As a young surveyor, Mr. Washington plotted the original lots for the city in 1749.  Today, you will see Christ Church, where Mr. Washington served as vestryman; and ride by Gadsby's Tavern, which every year celebrates Washington's Birthnight Ball and where George and Martha often dined and danced; Market Square, where Washington commanded his troops; and, the Apothecary Shop, often frequented by Washington.  The once bustling seaport of Alexandria was Mr. Washington's lifeline to news from the other colonies and from Europe.

FEATURES:  Roundtrip transportation included

TOUR OF THE NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY
AND THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF WOMEN IN THE ARTS (CANCELED)
DATE:
Thursday 29 November (canceled)
TIME:
12:30 – 4:30
Price:
$60.00

PROGRAM:
The National Portrait Gallery was established by an Act of Congress in 1962 and opened to the public in 1968.  The Portrait Gallery’s mission is to collect and display images of “men and women who have made significant contributions to the history, development and culture of the people of the United States.” It is the only museum of its kind in the United States to combine the aspects of American history, biography and art.  Guests will have the opportunity to browse through the “Lansdowne” portrait of George Washington by Gilbert Stuart, Benjamin Franklin portrait featured on the new $100 bill by Joseph Duplessis, and Michael Jackson by Andy Warhol.  Additionally, the National Portrait Gallery’s collections include portraits of all U.S. presidents, more than 5,400 glass-plate negatives from the studios of Mathew Brady and original artwork from more than 1,600 TIME magazine covers.

Guests will then continue on to the National Museum of Women in the Arts, the first museum in the world devoted specifically to works of art produced by women throughout the centuries and from around the world.  The Museum was established in response to a need voiced by art historians, collectors, and museum professionals for an institution that focuses on the contributions of women to the history of art.  Located just two blocks from the White House, the Museum is housed in a Renaissance Revival building built in 1907.  The permanent collection dates back to the Renaissance and includes not only examples of Western Art, but also Native works from America and abroad.  Following your tour of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, guests will enjoy lunch in the NMWA café.
