Welcome

New Orleans last hosted an IEEE GLOBECOM Conference in 1985. At that time, G. Allan Ledbetter, General Chair, presided over a very successful conference which embraced the theme, “Communication Technology To Provide New Services.”

Since that time, a great deal of change has taken place in both New Orleans and around the world. New Orleans is steadily recovering from one of the most devastating natural disasters in the history of the United States – Hurricane Katrina. The Crescent City’s convention infrastructure is intact and our tourism services are thriving once more. Telecommunications applications and services are playing a major role in the rebuilding of the Louisiana and Mississippi Gulf coast area.

From a broader perspective, the telecommunications industry has certainly delivered many new services since 1985 – such as broadband and wireless applications, all of which have served to create a more connected world and a true global economy.

Boundaries have been eliminated and consumers’ expectations are at an all time high. “WOW” has become the expected. You can do online trading in a foreign market; read your hometown newspaper, or, better yet, one from Europe or Asia; perform medical consulting across the country, or across continents; and, for those of you that love to “shop till you drop” the whole world has become our marketplace. Where do you want to go? What do you want to do? Through a keystroke or interactive voice system, all of this, and more, is available to all of us.

While reflecting on the past is quite interesting, it is the present, and especially the future that offer the most exciting revelations of the here and now, and of visions of things to come. It is in that spirit that on behalf of our Organizing Committee, We invite you to join us in New Orleans 30 November – 4 December 2008 for the IEEE GLOBECOM 2008 Conference.   Themed for “Building A Better World Through Communications”, IEEE GLOBECOM 2008 will bring together academia, telecommunications manufacturing and suppliers, as well as industry engineers and management in a mutually beneficial environment.

In addition, IEEE GLOEBECOM 2008 will host the 3rd Annual IEEE Communications Industry Forum & EXPO, which includes the Design and Developers Forum. The World Telecommunications Congress (WTC), also co-located with IEEE GLOBECOM 2008, will be held from 1 - 4 December 2008.

IEEE GLOBECOM 2008 will be held at the Hilton New Orleans Riverside. Within walking distance of the hotel are many of the historical sites, world class restaurants and antique shops in the French Quarter that people from all corners of the earth come to visit. One block away is a superb aquarium, and by taking a short stroll through the Hilton Hotel, you can access the many shops in the Riverwalk development along the Mississippi River.

We look forward to seeing you at the IEEE GLOBECOM 2008.
